Yard Cafe and Kitchen Ltd is a snug, locally frequented café tucked away in the quiet courtyard of Withey's Yard just off Stroud’s busy High Street. It’s the kind of spot that rewards those willing to explore the little side alleys and promises a comfortable place to settle in whether you’re starting your day or looking for a relaxed lunch break.

The atmosphere here leans into a laid-back, welcoming vibe with friendly staff who make an effort to connect without rushing you. While the entrance signage is subtle and might leave some visitors wondering whether to wait to be seated or grab a table, once inside it feels uncomplicated and informal—perfect for solo visits, catch-ups, or a casual stop between errands.

Yard Cafe’s menu focuses on classic café staples with highlights like a well-loved English Breakfast and fresh salads, alongside sweet treats such as chocolate brownie and the occasional specials board featuring dishes like chorizo hash and bubble & squeak. Portions generally lean towards moderate sizes, which can suit those who prefer lighter meals or want to combine savory and sweet options without feeling too full. The food presentation is neat and reflects a straightforward, honest approach rather than a high-concept menu.

The coffee offering here deserves special mention, with several visitors noting the quality of the cappuccino and the reliability of their chai latte. This suggests the baristas take care with their brewing, adding to the café’s appeal for regular coffee seekers and those who enjoy pairing a well-made drink with their meal.

The setting in the courtyard lends itself well to warmer days, where natural light and fresh air can enhance the experience, though the interior remains cosy enough for chillier weather. Its proximity to local cultural spots, like nearby galleries, makes it a convenient stop for folks spending time exploring Stroud’s creative scene.

Who this café suits best:

  • People looking for a relaxed breakfast or casual lunch in a quieter part of town.
  • Locals who appreciate a friendly welcome and dependable coffee alongside simple, tasty food.
  • Visitors exploring Stroud’s town centre who want to pause somewhere comfortable near arts and shops.

Best times to visit tend to be mid-mornings or early afternoons on weekdays when the café is lively but not overwhelmingly busy, although weekends draw a steady flow, especially during gallery openings or local events.

Hands down the best breakfast I’ve had in a long time. The staff were really friendly and the service was great. We were a bit unsure at first whether we had to wait to be seated or just grab a table as there wasn’t much signage but we eventually just sat ourselves down. Totally worth it though. Highly recommend the chorizo hash from the specials board was so flavourful, and the tomatoes were honestly the best I’ve ever tasted with so much flavour. Will definitely be back when in the area.

Discovered this cafe last week and have been back 2 times since! It’s so cosy and perfect and right next to an art gallery which is amazing! The staff are so welcoming and the food is lovely! Plus the chai latte is always perfect :) Definitely going to become a regular stop!

What a lovely little find this was. We found this place tucked away at the end of a little alley which you access from the main shopping street. Nicely presented food, however I think they could have been a bit more generous with the portions. The poached egg on toast with avacado was delicious but another slice of toast would have been nice. Lots of choice and reasonably priced too. A nice little outdoor area to sit in too but for us it was a little hot.

Amazing food with a specials board & lovely atmosphere in a lovely courtyard. We had the Chorizo Rosti and the Bubble & Squeak with a pot of tea. Couldn't resist being greedy by following up with Raspberry Bakewell and Pastel de Nata. Highly recommended.

Busy. But service was quick. Ordered a decaffeinated cappuccino. Really good size, and quite possibly the best cappuccino I've ever tasted.

Fantastic café, delicious coffee and food (the croque madame and croque monsieur are huge portions!:). Absolutely love décor Sometimes difficult to get a seat on Saturday as it's so popular! Lovely staff as well- warm and attentive. Definitely my favourite spot when I'm visiting Stroud!

Great cafe with indoor and outdoor seats. The atmosphere is very lively, staff is friendly, very good choice of food and everything we had tasted great. The highlight for us was the coffee - it was amazing! We’re hoping to go back there tomorrow!
